I have had a few weeks away from my blog and Twitter - sometimes I have to prioritise the work I do and unfortunately these weren't high enough up my list to be achievable. Having a head that doesn't always work effectively can certainly make life interesting. However, I have been thinking about what I wanted to say so not a completely wasted few weeks! This week I want to talk about Sway
This week was blog week - it feels like being in some sort of educational bake off! A new medium to get our heads around and a new way to present our discussions. I couldn't be more proud of the way in which my students have embraced this and the discussions they have produced. Last week at the end of the collaborate session when I asked for feedback I mentioned that there were no comments on the blog posts I was posting each week and I was hoping that the blog weeks would help people to feel more comfortable to add comments or write their own posts. This provoked some discussion about the blog and it became apparent that some students were reading the posts and following up on the links to additional resources. This made my heart sing!
Yesterday my students and I had our second Blackboard Collaborate session and we had definitely improved on the week before.
After a false start to using Collaborate with students last week (all the University IT systems failed) we had our rescheduled tutorial this morning. Only a slight glitch in that I had informed one half of the group when the new tutorial would be and not the other half - it had been a busy day! Lots of apologies from me and with very good grace most of the students managed to join the session.
Our nursing courses are complex to run. This is partly due to the numbers of students involved, the number of groups they are divided into and the amount of programme and practice information that needs to be shared. In the child field we have it relatively easy only 2 groups and 50 students, things tend to get complicated when the module is accessed by all nursing students, and sometimes the social workers and midwives too. The area for improvement that students feedback on most often is around communication.
Next Monday (October 3) I have my first Blackboard Collaborate session with 50 Child nursing students. We will be discussing ethical principles. To try and ensure that this works smoothly I have put together a package for students to help them understand why and how we will be using Blackboard Collaborate.
Last week @UoLchildnursing hosted our first Twitter Chat using the #CYPUoL. The aim of this account is to promote the work we do as educators, researchers and practitioners in Leeds and also engage with students and help them link to the wider community of nurses and other healthcare providers. As a first chat it was successful with several students and colleagues joining and contributing their thoughts on the subject of "Why be a children's nurse?"
