On Monday, September 25 the Healthcare Ethics and Law module commenced. This is a level 2 module undertaken by all fields of nursing; this equates to approximately 240 students. The first session asks students to consider ethical issues that they are aware of from practice and aims to get them to consider why these are ethical issues. This session is normally undertaken in small group tutorials that are field specific (adult, child or mental health nurses). Following on from my blended learning pilot with the child nursing students, in this module last year we decided to start this year with a Twitter chat for all the students. I admit to being a little apprehensive.

The session that I deliver on finding information includes introduction to Minerva - portal and VLE, organisational spaces they need to look at and what is contained within them, module spaces and how they are organised, places to find support including skills@library and key people. I also discuss social media, how to use it responsibly, the need to follow the NMC code of conduct and specifc guidance on the responsible use of social media. All in the space of 2 hours!
Last week I won a University of Leeds Partnership Award for Innovation. These awards celebrate the Leeds Partnership between students and staff and the expectations that we can expect from each other. I was nominated for the work that I've done using social media and blended learning. I knew I had been shortlisted but didn't expect to win and still can't really believe that I did. Whilst I received the award it was only possible to achieve the things that I have done this year with the help and support of my students and colleagues. Thank you to all of them for trying new things and working in different ways - it took a lot of courage.
On Wednesday a colleague and I attended a Clinical Education Network event (ClinEdNet) looking at the use of social media in clinical education. ClinEdNet was set up by people in Leeds Institute of Medical Education (LIME) at the University of Leeds to foster the sharing of information and enable networking. At this event Alison Hartley (Curriculum Development Associate - University of Bradford) presented research she had done with a cohort of pharmacy students to explore how they were using social media. It was an interesting and thought provoking presentation.
I have been reviewing the evaluations from my pilot with the child nursing students in semester 1. I compiled a survey using Bristol Online Survey that particularly focused on all the methods of teaching and learning within the module and students have also commented in the general module evaluation. Now we have to decide what to do with this feedback. There are several factors that need to be considered. First, the number of students who completed the evaluation and their representativeness; I am currently ensconced in a pit of marking. I am making my way to the surface and can almost see the light above but still a way to go! Whilst I joke about this it is something I find exceedingly difficult and can only do thanks to Zoe Gilchrist and Angie O'Keefe coming up with a workaround for me.
