Next Monday (October 3) I have my first Blackboard Collaborate session with 50 Child nursing students. We will be discussing ethical principles. To try and ensure that this works smoothly I have put together a package for students to help them understand why and how we will be using Blackboard Collaborate. Over the summer I looked at the various methods of working with students that were available to us to try and plan a timetable that used appropriate methods of collaborating for the content of the session. This resulted in a timetable with three face-to-face sessions, 4 collaborate sessions, 2 sessions where students post to a blog and 2 sessions where they work independently using Articulate. By utilising different methods of engagement I am hoping that students remain interested by the sessions, start to think about the topic areas outside of the module sessions and start to build resources that they can all draw on. In August I attended a Blackboard Collaborate webinar with our SDDU department which was informative, highlighted the tools available to help with encouraging engagement and also left me feeling that maybe I had bitten of more than I could chew! Many positive affirmations, mindfulness sessions and quiet time with Summer later I realised that this was achievable but would need very careful planning and practice with moderating sessions so I needed a guinea pig...
