After a false start to using Collaborate with students last week (all the University IT systems failed) we had our rescheduled tutorial this morning. Only a slight glitch in that I had informed one half of the group when the new tutorial would be and not the other half - it had been a busy day! Lots of apologies from me and with very good grace most of the students managed to join the session. I had written a lesson plan and incorporated slides that could help me introduce collaboration if we got stuck and had this as a comfort blanket. I wobbled a little prior to the session - confidence had waned slightly from last week but a positive affirmation (everything I need is within me) and use of my wrist malla helped me settle. We were discussing ethical principles and had 3 scenarios to work through. After discussing the ground rules I asked someone to summarize the key points from the key lecture and polled to see if the group thought everything had been covered. Discussion included some students using the microphone and more using chat and I tried to pull out key points that were being made. The students split into the breakout rooms and had remembered which group they belonged to. Those on mobile devices relied on their group moderator to move them to a room. We used the timer facility and I asked people to raise a hand if they needed me. After 15 minutes the group came back together and all of the breakout room slides were moved back to the main room. We got through feedback on all 3 scenarios and then I had a slide to conclude. At this point I turned the recording off and asked for feedback on the way the sessions was delivered. I had a poll question and also asked for written feedback in the chat. We all learnt a lot! On the whole feedback was positive with some issues around the way the tech was used being raised. For example advice was given by one student to turn off the 'show event' function in the Chat settings so that it was easier to follow conversations. Whilst most of the feedback focusing on the way collaboration occurred was positive one student did comment that it felt a 'very cold way to interact'. I need to consider this and try and find ways to improve this.
So what did I learn? (Pleased with)
So what did I learn? (needs work)
For a first attempt I am cautiously pleased with the way that it went and am looking forward to next weeks session on ethical theories.
