Over the past few years I have used a variety of different learning technologies in order to engage with students as part of different modules. I try and use blended learning approaches to ensure that the right delivery is used for the content. Up to the present time this has mainly involved setting up work for students to complete prior to sessions so that the face-to-face delivery can be scenario or skills based. Teaching an acutely I'll child module this has been quite successful and has included the use of Articulate, Wimba, YouTube, reusable learning objects from other institutions and guidance on recommended reading. I am now looking to take things further to actively seek engagement from and with students.
This semester I am teaching an ethics module and have the responsibility for 50 year 2 undergraduate child nursing students. The module is usually delivered via key lectures or Articulate presentations to all fields of nursing then followed up with field specific tutorials. Last year I found leading tutorials for such a large group quite difficult to manage and felt that whilst some students contributed many stayed quiet. As a short term fix I introduced Terry the `turtle and he was passed to someone during each of the group activities and that person had to contribute something during the feedback. Terry was successful but I felt we could do better. This year I am introducing Blackboard Collaborate sessions and a group blog as well as face to face sessions. I've been on a steep learning curve and have so far produced an information pack for the students and have facilitated some information sessions for them to show them how Collaborate works. The last practice session is tomorrow and then we go live. I will document how we all get on!
